Shelby and Tyler had a small and intimate wedding off of Highway 1, Big Sur. These two lovebirds have been together for over 10 years. They met when Shelby was only 18 years old and Tyler was 20 years old! Shelby looked absolutely gorgeous from her hair & makeup to her dress, Swenson & Silacci bouquet, and customized denim jacket courtesy of Megan Miller — fun fact: everyone in Shelby’s bridal party got to received their own personal denim jacket and a customized Big Sur Coastline patch!. The day was perfect from their intimate coastal beach ceremony to their Big Sur redwood wedding reception. It was such an honor being apart of their special day and photographing this madly in love pair.
Shelby and Tyler’s ceremony was located at the breathtaking Carmel Meadows Beach, which is a well known local favorite spot! This coastal trail is surrounded by clear ocean waters, succulents, cypress trees, and wildflowers. The backdrop of Carmel Meadows Beach is the edge of Point Lobos State Nature Reserve and Carmel River State Beach; two National State Reservoirs known for preserving nature’s stunning sanctuaries. After Shelby and Tyler’s intimate ceremony, they celebrated their wedding reception at the beautiful, rustic and quaint Big Sur Bakery. Surrounded by redwood trees and twinkle lights, these two souls celebrated their love under the midnight starry sky.
We started dating when Shelby was 18 and Tyler was 20 so 10 years ago! Both of us worked as lifeguards at a local water park in Oklahoma City during our summers and we were just really good friends for about a year or two before we started dating. We both went to Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Oklahoma and enlisted in the Navy Reserves. Over the last decade, we have been through it all and came out stronger than ever! We endured long distance for 2 years, the best of times and the worst of times but each experience brought us closer and made it very clear that we were with the person we wanted to spend forever with. Our new home is in Fort Worth, Texas with our two weenie dogs and we are so exciting to see what future has in store for us!
What was the inspiration for your wedding day?
Combining our love for the outdoors with our friends and family.
How and why did you pick Big Sur for your destination wedding??
We knew we wanted a destination wedding from the moment we started planning. What better way to start your marriage than on an adventure?! We both knew we wanted to get married along the northern(ish) west coast. The coast line and mountains seemed so dreamy and have always inspired us! We had never been to Big Sur (or any where further north of LA) when we chose the location but after seeing photos of Big Sur we fell in LOVE. And it couldn’t have been more perfect! Big Sur literally took our breath away and brought tears to my eyes. Fun fact: We did not go visit any of our locations or meet any vendors until less then 30 days before the wedding! It was kind of exciting/freeing and nerve wrecking all at once.
How and why did you pick the Big Sur Bakery for your reception?
We came across the Big Sur Bakery after doing some research on Pinterest and reading a few wedding blogs! It was exactly what we were both looking for- small, intimate and outdoors. The beautiful wooden tables, the sunshades, hanging lights paired with the greenery and succulents were so perfect! Such a cozy quaint vibe for our small group.
What special details did you include in your wedding or reception??
There are a few things! Since we were having a destination wedding, we knew our grandparents and other family members might not be able to attend so we decided to create special invites and streamed it live on Facebook in a special group for them to watch!
I had custom denim jackets made for my bridesmaids and myself with our last names written on the back. The girls loved them and I loved finally wearing my new last name We also had custom patches and koozies made for our guests – I ended up sewing one of the patches on my denim jacket! By far my favorite denim jacket, forever.
How did you make your wedding day special and make it about the two of you??!
We made our wedding small, intimate and laid back. We had ~30 people attend our wedding and it was so perfect! Keeping our wedding small and intimate allowed us to be more in the moment and let us to feel like it was about the two of us.
Most memorable moment (s) of your wedding day? (From Groom and from Bride)
From the Groom: “Seeing Shelby walk down the “isle” to the wedding rock. A moment I will never forget. All of the anticipation, the years, days and the minutes leading up to our wedding were all worth it when i finally got to see my bride for the first time. She took my breath away and was more beautiful than i could have ever imagined. I wish I could re-live that day over and over again.”
From the Bride: “Sneaking off to take photos in the Redwoods on our way to the reception. I remember stepping in to the redwoods and feeling my breath be taken away. It was so us, we love hiking and being outdoors so it was really perfect. Even though it was only for a brief amount of time and we were with our photographers, we truly felt like it was just the two of us in those woods. It was such a special, peaceful moment.”
What was your favorite part about the wedding planning process?
Being able to get creative and let our personalities show! We had a lot of fun planning over the months leading up to it and it was so exciting to see our vision come to life!
Any advice for those planning now?
Don’t sweat the small stuff. While all the details are pretty and a nice touch, at the end of the day it’s about the two of you and the love you have for one another. You are marrying your best friend! Don’t let anything distract you from that.
